What Makes a Good TV Presenter?

One of the things we look for as Producers is – ‘can you be Produced?’

One of the main things Producers look for when working with talent is ‘can you be produced’?  This basically means can you take notes and direction?  When it comes to bringing a script to life you need to work in context of the whole show.  A Producer will always know the context of where your PTC (piece to camera) goes so the notes they give you may not always be obvious.  It’s important as a presenter that you can take these notes on board and give the Producer what they need.

A presenter is someone who works in a team.  So being able to take notes and indeed work as part of a team is really important.  A good attitude, a good work ethic and a ‘can do’ attitude is key to your success as a presenter.

The industry is small and we always ask each other ‘what are they like to work with’, ‘can they be produced’?  So make sure you keep this in mind!

As a TV Presenter you need to work out what your brand is and indeed what kind of market you would appeal to – and this is what we are experts in.

Everyone who works with is expertly produced to be a unique product so you can stand out from the crowd.

Take Lorraine – she came on our award-winning fast track presenter training programme this month.  She is really suited to the entertainment market so we cleverly branded her as a new voice, with a glamorous edge who could work in primetime TV.  In the edit we then ensure all the graphics, music, pacing and material works for that market so when commissioners and TV Producers see the tape it’s clear what market you are going for.

It’s been another busy couple of weeks at The Presenter Studio. We’ve been in the USA again and looks like we could be off to Dubai in a couple of weeks too. Presenter Studio is going international!

We have a busy week coming up too with the next Fast Track course, a private one to one filming day with an exciting stylist and our Meet The Agent session where ten presenters are having some face-to-face time with a top agent… On top of that we are also at an event tonight in London called Drag Queens and Daytime TV Producers, organised by ‘So You Want To Work in Television.

You may know that Leon has spent many, many, hours at a certain house in North London over the years as Big Brother himself. Well, the show is up for an award and he’d love it if you could vote for it!!!

Hello everyone – I know we say it every week – but it’s been another busy few days at The Presenter Studio…

Two private one-to-one presenter training filming days this week alongside consultations, meetings with channels and two production companies requesting presenters for their projects… Busy is good though!

The more you can do to find your voice and share your passions and opinions – the better. Sitting back and waiting for things to happen is never going to work. You need to be finding ways to get yourself out there and doing what you love.

Presenting is all about selling who YOU are and what makes YOU different and that’s what we love helping people to achieve. It’s so exciting to hear about what you are all up to. Stephen Simpson has been filming for a Korean Documentary about Charles Darwin and John Mason just got a presenting gig at the Commonwealth Games. Opportunities are everywhere…

Well – Leon joins the X Factor from next week (not as a judge sadly yet…) and Gareth continues to pitch ideas to Broadcasters as Head of Development for a Production company. Leon Campbell and Gareth Davies, founders of The Presenter Studio have now worked in TV for 20 years each – that’s a combined 40 years.  Our experience is incredibly broad from documentaries, to big events, to entertainment shows, to news, to childrens.  Each genre of TV works very differently and requires very different skills and packaging from the talent.

We have broken new talent on all the major channels and continue to do so each year.  Gareth is currently working as Head of Development for Denham Productions – developing and pitching shows with new talent attached.  Much of this talent is coming through The Presenter Studio.  Whilst we can’t promise this to everybody, as we can never predict the future needs of channels, where possible we always think of our own clients first.

All the training and products we do here are exactly the same as if we were working with you on a TV show.  We run things as we would on any TV job.  It’s crucial to us that you learn the correct way of working and that whilst we all have a great time, we do our best to help you understand how our industry works and what it demands from you.  It’s a cut-throat business.  This is why so many agents and TV Channels/companies approach us asking us to recommend talent.  They trust our experience.  And they also value our opinion.

We are hugely passionate about what we do here.  We offer free networking events to all our clients, develop ideas for many, and put you up for work – all for free.

We set up this business 4 years ago out of pure frustration.  There is so much bad advise out there.  It’s shocking to see.  And our industry thrives on new talent – it’s what everyone wants.
