Liz Truss Speech

What did you think of Liz Truss’ speech yesterday as she entered no 10?  As we sit here on a long train journey up north we wanted to share our thoughts…

This was her opportunity to shine.  To show the nation a new leader.  And to be unique. Here’s what we thought…

1.  Passion.  For us it lacked genuine and honest passion.  Words need to come from the heart not just the head.  They need to be felt not just spoken.  It’s not enough to write a ‘powerful speech’ - your delivery can change and add so much.  You need to bring your script to life.  Play with the words.  Use the words.  And above all own them.

2.  Conviction.  This is an opportunity to show the nation a leader who is confident, assured and trustworthy.  But Liz didn’t feel fully connected.  She didn’t fully commit. It felt half hearted.  A leader who hasn’t yet decided ‘how I want to come across’ and ‘what are my most powerful personal attributes’ I want to display.

3.  Unique.  A speech should feel like a unique moment in time.  Something personal to you.  But this felt like a missed opportunity - a copy and paste job.  There was very little that felt this was someone laying out their own stall.  Having their own style. Instead it felt forgettably traditional and all too familiar.  So we wonder how many people really felt empowered by her speech.

4.  The visual.  Clothes and how you look do play a crucial part in how you come across. Bright colours, clean confident lines work well on camera.  Instead Liz’s outfit was more on the dark side, and felt ‘soft’ on camera.

5.  One chance.  This was a once in a lifetime moment.  Was it memorable?  Was it personal?  Was it unique?  We don’t think it was.  And that comes down to a lack of purpose.

PRESENTER TRAINING DUBAI

The Presenter Studio are coming to Dubai in March to run some exlcusive presenter training sessions.  We have a 1 day presenter training programme and a 2 day. Congratulations to chef Norman Musa

We have a whole range of clients come and work with us.  All with very different ambitions and goals.  A few years ago Malaysian chef Norman Musa came and trained with us.  He came on the award-winning Fast Track TV Presenter Training Course. and then we also went to Manchester where we filmed with him in our 1 to 1 advanced presenter training programme.  Norman very quicky found success and went on to present for the BBC and Channel 4 on different food programmes.  He very kindly dropped us a quick update email today to say that he is now into his 5th series of his own cooking series back in Malaysia too.  We are so proud of all the success he has had.   This is what he said about working with us too: 

"Thanks to you and the course I now have 4 seasons of my own cooking show on Malaysian TV, and am about to film my 5th!"

CASE STUDY 1

Client: NIKE

BRIEF:

To train 100 of their social media influencers from all around the world in one session in London.

THE PROCESS:

NIKE asked us to coach 100 EKINS (social media influencer team – NIKE spelt backwards) to help them come across on brand, natural and engaging for all their social media and video content.

After initial conversations we wrote them a bespoke training programme that was both practical and informative, working with the scripts and type of work NIKE were doing.

THE TRAINING DAY:

We had 3 hours to coach 100 clients flown from all over the world to work with us. Clients worked in teams and received individual coaching around various exercises.

Here's one example of how a client had a bespoke media training day that also combined presentation skills coaching.  

CLIENT: SAGE

BRIEF:

A one day bespoke training session for 4 people, to include media training and presentation skills coaching.

BEFORE THE DAY:

Each attendee is sent a form, where they can tell us about their business, their role, their needs and want to get out of their time with us.  

A BESPOKE TRAINING PROGRAMME:

We tailor-make the programme to suit each individual’s needs, and those of the department that asked us to do the training.

A DAY OF TWO HALVES - AM: MEDIA TRAINING. PM: PRESENTATION SKILLS:

The morning focussed on media training, and the afternoon on presentation skills.

We started by taking a step back, looking at the brand of the business, their customer, the ambition of the business and the purpose of their video content. This ‘re-group’ really helps the clients to revaluate, refocus and puts everything we do into context.

DEVELOPING YOUR PERSONAL BRAND:

We discuss the importance of finding your own voice, but one that works within the voice of the business – and that is the core purpose of the whole day – to explore, develop and establish each individual’s presenting style.

OUR DO’S AND DON’TS:

There are no general rules to how to be a good presenter – as each person is different. So we chat you through our checklist of things to think about when it comes to being ‘you’ and ‘believable’ on camera.

ON CAMERA WORK:

We worked with the clients in lots of different ways, with and without scripts - putting the clients in scenarios that reflect the media work they will have to do.  Each exercise is also about building their personal brand, with detailed coaching from us.

SCRIPTS AND DEALING WITH INFORMATION/TAKE-OUT:

Scripts play a big part in what we do – the foundation to a good presenter is understanding what makes a good script, how to make it your own, and how to deal with any information you might need to get across.

PRESENTATION SKILLS:

The afternoon was spent looking at presentation skills. We started off with our do’s and dont’s, before giving feedback on the scripts they had previously written.

Much time was then spent rewriting scripts, before we worked with each person individually on delivering their new presentation in front of the room.

THEIR PERSONAL BRANDS:

We end the day discussing their personal brands, bringing together all the work we have done.
