WHAT MAKES A GOOD TV PRESENTER?

Thursday, 10 December 2015 13:10

As working TV Producers we work with presenters all the time as part of our day jobs.  This is what a Producer wants from a presenter on their show.

A GOOD ATTITUDE:  TV is a hard industry.  Long hours.  Tight budgets.  And quick turnarounds.  So what you want from your presenter is someone who is really easy to work with and someone who understands and appreciates the hard work everyone is doing on the show.  At the end of the day all the work the team put into the show is there to make the presenter look good.  So a word of thanks goes a long way!

DO YOUR HOMEWORK:  A good presenter is one that is interested in the show they are presenting.  That means reading up on your subject matter, doing some of your own research and reading any notes that are sent to you by the team.

WARMTH:  A presenter is someone who is speaking to people in their living room at home.  We all watch TV for enjoyment.  So a presenter needs to have a good natural warmth for their message to be digested and understood.

FLEXIBILITY:  Things change the whole time in TV – schedules, scripts, and even content when you are live on air.  A good presenter is someone who doesn’t get frustrated by change, and who helps their producer get the best out of the situation, rather than someone who fights against it.
